Statement:
I am at last learning to support myself in the void of not knowing quite what I am doing ( whilst painting !) or where I am heading.
This leads to collaboration and surprise.
Vita / Lebenslauf:
I was born in Merseyside UK and found out at the age of 10 that others did not live so intensely in images.
I make images into which I can dream and in which I can breathe. from my adolescence onward, a painting was a way of stopping time and of making visible some central part of me.
In the 60's I studied painting at the central School of Art and design in London and then did a postgrad at the Slade.
I started selling landscape paintings and then fell out of the gallery sysytem with paintings of cracks in walls, full of existential angst. I made my living doing graphics, book illustration, animation and textile design, all to support my painting habit and let it unfold without pressure.
I became ensnared in Photo Realism and a series of life events caused me to nosedive. In the early 90's, when, with help I returned from the wreckage, I discovered my painting territory and the spontaneity of expression that had been stultified.
I also learnt that I didn't need to hang on to my paintings in order to know who I am. Phew !
I am at last able to devote myself to painting.
